Welcome to the Bible study podcast. I'm your host, Chris Christensen. Let's jump right into Luke. We left off in Luke 7,

0:22.4

verse 10, so we'll continue on in verse 11. Soon afterward, Jesus went to a town called Nain,

0:29.5

and his disciples in a large crowd went along with him. As he approached the town gate,

0:34.4

a dead person was being carried out, the only son of his mother,

0:43.0

and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her, and he said, don't cry. Then he went up and touched the coffin, and those carrying

And so as he's going along, it says he's going along with this large crowd.

1:34.1

And he just happens upon this funeral.

1:38.2

And obviously there is sadness in a funeral.

1:40.6

And there's sadness that this mother has lost her son after previously losing her husband.

1:46.6

She has also then, with the two men being lost in that day and age, lost her support.

1:53.3

That's why so many verses in the Bible talk about the widows and the orphans, taking care of

1:57.9

those who are not able to take care of themselves. And so there's this double

2:02.3

loss here. And Jesus comes across this widow, and he has pity on her. And so because he can,

2:09.3

he raises her son from the dead. And you can imagine that this gets a lot of attention. And this is a

2:15.7

miracle that also God performed through Elijah in the Old Testament.
