And today, we're talking about Paul Verhoeven.

You know, everybody's favorite.

He made films like Robocop and Starship Troopers, Hollow Man.

And you know what?

This episode might actually be a satire.

Is there anyone that worked in the Hollywood system that no matter how many movies they made,

that critics still didn't get what they were doing?

Critics definitely didn't get what he was doing.

That said, all of those movies have become so rehabilitated at this point

that I feel like it's almost like a straw man thing to say, ah, yes, the wildly misunderstood

Starship Troopers. People misunderstood it when it came out, but they haven't misunderstood

it since. I mean, two live action sequels and an animated series and I think three animated features

are still coming out.

One came out this year shows that, yeah, what he did was very popular and it continued

to live on.

The same thing was stuff like Robocop or even Total Recall.

Or Showgirls, for God's sake, one of the MGM's best-selling video cassettes of all time.

So here's what I think of Paul Verhoeven. Going into this episode, I was reminded of a quote

by Luke Moulet in Cayenne Cinema. Everyone's favorite Kea critic. And he was describing

Samuel Fuller, but he said, on fascism, only the point of view of someone who has been tempted is of any interest.
