I think at the 14 or 15 year point in my career, I think it's when I got up to 20 properties and they were paid off.

And I was just like, wow, I always had this idea of I want to make sure that I'm able to retire from the military and not have to work again. I also had this idea. I want to make sure that if the military doesn't let me retire for whatever reason and doesn't give me a pension for the rest of my life, I also want to make sure I'm okay. So I've always had this goal of I need to be financially independent outside of even what the military will pay me

I'm coming to you from Clemson, South Carolina, in my home office of looking in the backyard. Like many of you,

with the coronavirus pandemic, I'm staying at home most of the time. We do have some rent collections

and maintenance issues that come up from time to time that I usually handle by phone. But that's

not the topic of today's episode, actually.

I'm going to be talking on an interview with a guy named Rich Carey, and we're going to talk about

how he is invested in real estate with no debt. Rich is actually a fellow blogger. He writes a

blog over at rich on money.com. I'll put a link in the show description. But he's a really

interesting guy who has actually been in a career in the military in the Air Force as a special

agent in the Air Force. And he and his family have moved all over the place, usually every

couple of years. But in the meantime, while he was doing that, he bought rental properties.

And most of them have been in Montgomery, Alabama, where he currently

resides. He's going to retire from the military in about a year. And the interesting thing about

these properties, as I mentioned earlier, he used cash to buy them. He didn't use any financing.

And it's not that he's philosophically opposed to using financing to buy real estate. But these particular properties
