Mayor. Two days of commemorations are taking place this week. Today we heard a man recall his

final phone call to his mother. She was struggling for breath and said her last words, I can't breathe, I can't breathe.

That was the last time I heard her voice.

We also heard from the father of a five-year-old who said his son might still be alive

had he not followed the advice of firefighters to stay put.

I want the truth. I will not have peace until I have the truth. I want to know why I was

physically stopped from leaving the flat at about 2 a.m. Why were we kept inside for so long?

The first tribute today was for Isla El Gawari and her daughter, 27-year-old Merriam, who helped care for her.

They lived together in flat 196 on the 22nd floor.

Isla's surviving son, Ahmed, who grew up in Grenfell, paid tribute.

He wore a green heart-shaped badge, which has become a familiar

sight at these commemorations. It's worn as a symbol for those who died. Ahmed described his sister,

Merriam, as glamorous, happy, caring and funny. She was ambitious about her marketing career. She was

due to have an interview for her dream job on June the 15th, 2017, the day after the

fire. He said he didn't have the mental strength to speak in detail about his mother, but he said

his mother and his sister were inseparable. My mum touched many hearts and was a strong woman

who raised Mary and I on her own since my father passed. She was very

youthful, both inside and out. She was also a great authentic Egyptian cook. In fact, we started

recording her recipes only several months before the fire. On the night of the fire, Ahmed described

how his sister phoned him, and they left the line open as he rushed to Grenfell.
