Welcome back to the CBS Sports Eye on College Basketball Podcast where we sometimes discuss

Involves one of the biggest names in the sport, the presumptive number one overall pick of

the 2020 NBA draft Memphis freshman James Weissman, NCAA.

As you probably heard, has informed Memphis that James Weissman is, quote, likely ineligible.

Among other things, the school announced Friday that Weissman was going to be withheld from

competition based on a rule interpretation issued by the NCAA.

This all being tied to Penny Hardaway providing the Weissman family with approximately $11,500

for what the university called, quote, moving expenses.

That's back when Weissman moved from Nashville to Memphis in 2017.

At the time, Penny Hardaway was the coach at East High School in Memphis Weissman.

The ultimately enrolled at East High School in Memphis.

This would be a possible NCAA issue regardless of the specifics.

What makes it an undeniable NCAA issue is that in 2017, Penny Hardaway was a Memphis booster.

According to the way the NCAA defines such things.

What we have here, if you just strip all the details away, is a Memphis booster providing

a sizable amount of money to a five-star prospect's mother to get the family to move to Memphis.

Within that five-star prospect enrolled at the University of Memphis.

There's just no logical way to argue that's not against NCAA rules.

Memphis, again, was prepared to withhold James Weissman from competition as early as Friday

afternoon.
