And we begin with a literal Panda Express

on its way to China.

The National Zoo's famed Giant Pandas departed Washington DC yesterday afternoon,

leaving the Panda Exhibit empty and the Panda Cam shut off for the first time in 23 years.

Tien-Tien, Meijong, and their three-year-old son,

Shao-Chi, were loaded into crates

and escorted to a FedEx plane at Dulles

international airport.

The pandas had bamboo, apples, and pears, as well as a zookeeper and veterinarian

to care for them on the roughly 19-hour journey. Their departure marks the end of a research

agreement started in 1972 between the US and China

and according to CBS News leaves only four giant pandas in the US all at the Atlanta Zoo.

According to the agreement, those four will also have to be returned to China next year,

which means the U.S. will soon have none.
