Hello, I'm Sean Caren, and this is today in Parliament from BBC Radio 4 for Tuesday,

the 11th of February, when the trade minister said the UK wouldn't retaliate straight away

after Donald Trump imposed tariffs on steel.

What British industry needs and deserves is not a needier reaction, but a cool and clear-headed

sense of the UK's national interest. There's concern at proposed changes to the assisted

dying bill. How can we properly scrutinise this legislation when new amendments are being

made at the last minute, which potentially change the entire nature of the legislation that we're

attempting to scrutinise? And a committee hears about the alarming consequences for some children

of being taken into care. Low self-esteem, depression, anxiety, self-harm, which consumed most of my teenage years.

I can't remember most of my childhood as a consequence of this.

But first, a trade minister has played down the prospect of tit-for-tat tariffs

after President Trump signed an executive order, imposing a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminium imports into the US.

He said there would be no exceptions to the levy.

The tariffs are due to come into force on the 12th of March.

The UK steel industry has accused President Trump of taking a sledgehammer to free trade

and called for stronger action from the British government.

The trade minister, Douglas Alexander, said the UK would not react immediately.

What British industry needs and deserves is not a needier reaction,

but a cool and clear-headed sense of the UK's national interest

based on a full assessment of all the implications of the US's actions.
