When I was around 10 years old,

a neighboring small town was hosting one of those pop-up carnivals.

It was the kind of carnival where folded up,

smaller amusement rides were brought in on semi-trailers.

There were a few thrill rides,

like this octopus-looking thing that had passenger compartments on each arm,

and riders were spun around while being raised and lowered.

There were kids rides like Mary Go-Rounds

and different types of automobiles,

and of course, the ever-popular Ferris wheel.

There were probably a dozen rides that lined the five or six blocks of the main street.

My parents had friends in this small town.

A place they frequently patronized was a particular waterhole on the main street.

It worked out that they could socialize and have some drinks
