Summary

BDC (Ballistic Drop Compensating) Reticles are fast, simple and extremely popular. The hashmarks are based on a general ballistics curve most popular big game calibers follow pretty close out to 600 yards. But what if you want to know exactly where the hashmarks line up for your rifle and the load you’re pushing through it? What if you have a cartridge that falls outside of the “general ballistics curve”? Good questions! Jim and Mark sit down with Ryan Muckenhirn to chat through “Truing your BDC Reticle” for optimum accuracy!

What's up everybody, we have 10-ish minutes here with Mr. Ryan Muckiner and he's joining

0:06.6

us today to talk about well actually many different calibers and how they all interact

0:11.4

with our BDC radicals.

0:13.4

So in some ways you could call this truing your BDC to your particular cartridge leaving

0:18.5

your particular gun's barrel in your particular environment.

0:22.4

There's actually a lot of particulars involved in this whole thing.

0:25.5

So basically I'll give the gist of it then Ryan you take it away, a lot of people get

0:29.8

a rifle scope with a generic dead hole BDC radical in it, even perhaps a calber specific

0:36.4

specific BDC in it and they think you know well hey it's good to go.

0:41.7

Every 100 increment, 100 yard increment, each one of these hash marks aligns up, well

0:45.9

not necessarily because there are all of those particulars that we mentioned and so that

0:50.4

makes it a bit complicated and you're thinking geez guys it was really easy before why

0:54.2

do you have to make it more difficult.

0:56.2

It's not too difficult though.

0:57.8

There's only a few things and this is where Ryan is going to take over, this is how we

1:01.8

can actually figure out truly where each of those hash marks in your BDC and what distance

1:06.9

they correlate to your bullets trajectory through the air, what distances we will be holding

1:13.0

over exactly on them and then otherwise maybe making some subtle Kentucky windage estimations.

1:20.4

So how does it work Ryan?

1:22.7

Why is it that it's not always a perfect match?

1:25.7

Because if we were to do a calber specific BDC for your gun, we would have to know your

1:31.9

gun intimately like the individual firearm, the exact load that you plan on shooting it,
