Summary

In today’s day and age, it can already be hard to imagine a time where 30mm tubes were borderline unheard of. Ryan Muckenhirn and Jimmy buzz in for a 10 minute chat to talk about the evolution of scope tube sizes since Mr. Muckenhirn started in this industry not that long ago in relativity. It begs the question, will scope tubes continue growing? Will scopes of the future even be tubular at all? When will we go back to SAE in terms of measurement and quit using all this “Millimeter” crap? (Just kidding on that last one). We’d love to hear your thoughts!

What's up, Vortex Nation? We got 10 minutes here with Mr Ryan Muckinher and to talk about the evolution of rifle scope tube sizes.

0:07.0

And Ryan joins us here because Ryan has been in the industry, whether selling firearms at a gun shop or working with

0:13.2

different firearms related companies and now working for

0:15.8

Vortex, of interacting with many different scopes over history. And Ryan,

0:20.1

it used to be the case, especially here in the US, that kind of one-inch scope tubes

0:24.7

reign supreme.

0:26.5

Now there's 30 mil scope tubes and consumers are getting 34s and 35s and shoot even now a 40 millimeter tube came out I mean what's been the evolution of

0:36.7

this what's what's going on there well it's a good question I think it's pretty

0:39.9

subjective and open you know to some interpretation going back many years ago when I was

0:45.8

a retailer a very young guy was kind of one of my first real jobs behind the counter in a

0:50.4

shop one of my optics reps came in with the new line for this particular company

0:56.0

and we opened it up and there was a rifle scope that was this newfangled thing that was

1:01.2

a 30 millimeter tube and we're all looking at it and like,

1:05.2

wow, that's really incredible. But the looming question was why? And I think at the time

1:11.5

he was pretty straightforward with it and he said, well, you know, the 30 millimeter tube is kind of a new way that we can improve some small little attributes of optical performance and this and the other thing.

1:22.0

I think the perception was is that it was like way too radical and far too European

1:26.9

Oh right right and so interestingly enough that particular optic didn't do very well for us and then I think it was

1:35.0

ultimately discontinued several years later now one inches are kind of the

1:40.2

thing of the past and 30s seem to be taking off right I think we see a lot of even

1:45.5

in hunting yeah yeah and I think it comes down to a few things there's there's some

1:50.6

misconceptions that we should address and I think there's some definite points of talking on a 30 millimeter tube.

1:56.0

I think from what I gather from what I hear at a lot of shows and on the telephones and things like this is there's still a perception that a 30
