Summary

What’s the secret to long-range shooting? The answer my friend, is blowing in the wind. Literally. Much of the challenge, variability, frustration and skill regarding long-range shooting relates to wind. Gravity is a constant, wind is not. Ironically, the “F-ing wind”, as we like to call it is probably one of main the things that keeps us coming back to the range to get better at shooting. A viscous cycle really. Tune in to this long-winded 10-min talk for tips and tricks on how you can make better wind calls.

What's up everybody, we have 10 minutes here with Mr. Nick Lawfinberg across the table from

0:08.0

us and every time Nick joins us we're pretty much going to talk about precision rifle stuff,

0:11.7

long range stuff, and making yourself a bit more informed of a shooter out there on the

0:17.6

range.

0:18.6

And today we're going to talk about just a annoying little thing we all have to do with

0:23.6

called wind.

0:25.3

And so Nick, I think one of the things that I've found when I talk to really experienced

0:30.3

shooters is I'll tend to go out there on the range, I'll send a round down range, see

0:35.8

what happens, and you know the left right, that's kind of my first round is my indication

0:41.5

of what maybe the wind is doing that I make my correction from there, it's not wrong,

0:46.4

but it's also not exactly like let's say you're in some sort of a competition atmosphere

0:51.3

where that first round hit really makes a difference, or we were even discussing to

0:55.2

it could, or well it does make a big difference in hunting a lot of times.

0:58.7

And so the really good shooters out there, they have the ability to just understand what's

1:03.8

going on with the wind, it seems, and not that they're god, they know exactly what's

1:07.7

happening everywhere down range, but they have a better idea of it, just based on things

1:11.4

that they can read, experience that they have, seeing certain things that might mean

1:15.4

wind is, you know there's different thermals going on, different wind directions, as

1:19.4

you go down range at these longer range shots, and they have a higher chance of getting

1:24.0

that first round hit.

1:26.2

And so what are some of those things that they're doing, how can somebody improve their

1:31.6

chances of accurately understanding what's going to happen to their bullet to get that

...
