Summary

We’ve mentioned it in countless episodes prior to this one, but have yet to do a dedicated episode to the optical phenomena that is “parallax”. What is it and how does it affect us when we shoot? Some riflescopes have a “parallax dial” – what does that do? How about red dots and holographic sights that claim to be “parallax free”? When does it really matter and when does it not? We try and cram in all those questions and answers into this quick episode!

What's up everybody? We have 10 minutes here. It's just Mark and myself Jimmy here on the mic and we're going to talk about Parallax. Parallax is a topic that's come up in many of our podcasts. In fact, if you go back and you look at some of them or if you've listened to every single one, first off, thanks.

0:15.0

But this may be something you've already heard a lot about, maybe you know a lot about it, but we want to make sure that we have

0:20.0

somebody's out there searching specifically for something on Parallax.

0:23.2

We had that episode queued up and ready for you.

0:26.4

So I think a lot of what we'll do is sticking to Parallax in terms of Riflescopes, but really actually Parallax

0:32.0

in and of itself is kind of a it's just one

0:34.2

singular concept is just played out or manifested or seen in different ways with

0:38.3

different signing systems so anyway basically first off what you're to have is when you have a rifle scope.

0:44.4

You may have a rifle scope that is just straight up fixed parallax.

0:49.1

We have one of these in front of us here, it's our old Diamondback tactical, 3 to 9 it doesn't have it just has two knobs on the

0:55.4

turret saddle or the middle of the rifle scope one sticking up and one sticking out to

0:59.8

the right that's your elevation in windage and then there's no knob or neural to ring up on the

1:06.2

objective bell there's no knob sticking off to the left side nothing like that so

1:10.9

this is actually a fixed parallax scope. Generally speaking you'll see a lot of them fixed at 100 yards. Some

1:16.9

rim-fire scopes maybe fixed at 50 yards, you know, there's stuff like that. But anyway, that's

1:21.4

kind of how that works and we'll get into what that

1:23.2

means. Otherwise you may see other scopes like this razor gin 2 here in front of us as

1:28.5

well it has a knob sticking off to the left side. Actually it has two one of them

1:31.9

is the illumination but one of them

1:33.7

here the larger one is the parallax adjustment sometimes it might be up on your

1:38.7

objective bell to if you have what's called an AO adjustable objective.

1:42.8

Parallax is adjusted up there.
