Summary

Ryan Muckenhirn joins Jimmy and Mark to discuss the 7.62x51 NATO, and inevitably, it’s civilian cousin the .308 in this episode from our NATO cartridge series. We talk about what it is, where it came from, what it was used for and out of which firearm platforms along with maybe the idea that there could be some conspiracy theories behind this cartridge? Ryan also compares this cartridge to his Dad, earning it the new nickname in our books as just “Dad”. Listen in to find out why!

What's up everybody? We have 10 minutes here now carrying on with our NATO specials on the last two about the 9 mill and the five or I'm sorry the 9 by 19 the 556 you heard what exactly NATO stands for what it is the idea behind it and now we're carrying on getting a

0:14.7

little bit bigger we're going to the 762 by 51 I almost said 54 R earlier

0:20.5

but but that's that's right comrade yeah yeah right my bad that's that's because I'm

0:25.8

into a case and stuff but 762 but 51 yeah also sometimes referred to people I

0:32.4

guess the the consumer version or the very close relative

0:35.6

of it is the 308 yes the doppelganger I would assume much like the 556 the 9 by 19 when you look at the commercial loadings this one's

0:44.2

probably just a bit more stout thicker case walls all that carbon copy you got

0:48.8

the what was the thing on the bottom crimping or staking of the crimping orrimping or staking of the primer pocket.

0:54.3

Probably some weather resistant stuff there,

0:57.8

put in the primer area.

0:59.4

So that stuff tends to be kind of a common thing that they're doing on all the NATO

1:04.0

cartridges just because they're in harsh environments or they're getting shot out of

1:07.6

machine guns so they need those kinds of things to stay good usable. Are those the only differences between the NATO the 762 by

1:18.0

51 and 308 no so again interior stuff like Jim Touchtown is different but like the

1:24.1

loading is available for the consumer or the commercial market are vastly

1:29.1

greater. Okay right so the NATO catalog is going to give us a much smaller variety of

1:36.4

projectiles to fire out of it and we talked about that earlier in application and

1:40.0

use. I think if we're talking about the 762 by 51 NATO, it's one in the line that's really interesting because during its, I guess we're going to say, prototyping, production and adoption phase, it was released commercially and at the same time into NATO hands.

1:56.8

So this is a this is a cartridge that was developed post World War II post post-NATO form, and its adoption into NATO and commercial was almost, you know, at the same time, almost synonymous.

2:09.7

Was that strategic for any sort of reasons? I believe so. Yeah I think that it was a

2:15.3

out of wild there's some great conspiracy theories out there. I'd love to hear one.

2:18.4

762 by 51 conspiracy theories? Well I mean if... Do we need an hour for that? Maybe. That sounds hot. You want
