Welcome to Helix Talk, episode 109. I'm your co-host, Dr. Kane. And I'm Dr. Patel.

And the title of today's episode is, Clinical Controversy.

Can obese patients take DOACs for acute VTE or Venus thromboimblism?

And so in this episode, we're going to cover the pros and the cons

and what the latest and greatest literature that's out there regarding the use of these DOACs

in patients who have VTE.

Again, there's literature for patients using DOACs and obesity and atrial fibriolation,

but we're not going to talk about the AFIP.

We're keeping the anticoag indication to Venus Rambo embolism, VTE only.

So we'll kick it up by talking about a completely fictitious patient.

We're going to call him George.

George is a 55-year-old guy who was admitted to the hospital.

He had sudden onset, shortness of breath, chest pain, and hypoxemia.

They do a CT chest with contrast and show that he has a big pulmonary embolism.
