I'd like to welcome everybody today's presentation on Alzheimer's and Dementias,

evidence-based intervention strategies.

I think in the YouTube title, it actually said groundbreaking strategies, but that's just one of

those clickbait words they want you to use.

In this presentation, we'll review the scope of practice for mental health clinicians,

identify who's involved in the treatment process, review the most common cognitive

staging tools and their purpose, and discuss evidence-based interventions for symptoms

in each piece of life.

Counseling is more than talk therapy, and I want people to recognize that.

If you are going in to work in an assisted living facility or a nursing home, you may not

be able to effectively engage in what we typically think of as talk

therapy, rogerian therapy, where they're going to do a lot of talking, you're going to do

the reflecting. If you're working with people who are experiencing cognitive decline,

some of the cognitive tools that we sometimes use may not be

very helpful. So what can we do within our scope of practice? So counseling is defined as rendering

to individuals, groups, organizations, or the general public. So this includes people who are patients and the general public.

Any service involving the application of principles, techniques, methods, or procedures of the

counseling profession. We can engage in counseling. We can select, or I'm sorry, in testing.

We can select, administer, score, and interpret instruments

designed to assess aptitudes, achievements, or interests, or to understand and measure or facilitate

or diagnose problems or dysfunction within the context of human growth and development.

In order to do testing, you need to be approved at one of four different levels.
