Summary

Why would anybody want to practice Sabbath? Over a decade ago, Judith Shulevitz wrote a book called 'The Sabbath World: Glimpses of a Different Order of Time.' Before most of us had smartphones and remote jobs, she was calling attention to the troubling trajectory of an increasingly productivity-focused western culture. In a few years, she argued, we would simply be working all the time. Her prediction, it seems, has come true. The ramping up of 24/7 industry, news, and entertainment has created a baseline busyness unlike any in human history. But what if it’s doing more harm than good? What if, to live a good life, we need to rest, even if it comes at a cost? In this episode, Judith discusses how we got here, and why the ancient practice of Sabbath might help us re-establish a healthy relationship to time and to each other.   Show Notes: Similar episodes The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry: John Mark Comer The Price of the Pursuit of Pleasure: Anna Lembke Man Shall Not Live by Profit Alone: Jay Jakub Time Management for Mortals: Oliver Burkeman Resources mentioned this episode The Sabbath World by Judith Shulevitz The Rainbow by D.H. Each week, I sit down with Savannah Locke, a self-admitted pop culture expert, and she helps me catch up on everything I've missed, which given that I do not own a cell phone is quite a bit.

Savannah was very pleased to teach me about the fact

that Taylor Swift had gotten engaged, about six weeks after it happened. So on the subtext,

0:28.4

Savannah brings a pop culture moment, celebrity drama, internet debates for our shows,

0:33.1

and together we ask a deeper question. Why does any of this actually matter? What is it reveal about our

0:39.1

culture, our theology, and the lives that we are living online and in the public square?

0:44.5

And how might we, as Christians, enjoy the world in ways that reflect truth, beauty, and goodness?

0:50.5

It's a conversation between someone who lives very much on the internet and someone who lives a lot off of it,

0:57.0

and that tension makes for surprisingly meaningful dialogue.

1:00.8

If you're looking for a place to begin, I'd suggest our recent episode on the rival Super Bowl halftime shows, a fascinating conversation.

Hi, friends. Annie F. Downs here. If you've ever felt overwhelmed, distracted, or unsure where

1:22.2

to begin when it comes to reading scripture, I want to invite you to read the Gospels with

1:26.5

me every month.

1:29.6

That's Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.

1:35.2

Every day on the Let's Read the Gospels podcast is an invitation to slow down and spend intentional time with Jesus through Scripture.

1:38.0

I started reading through the Gospels in a month because I kept trying to read the

1:41.5

whole Bible in a year and would find myself getting behind and getting

1:44.2

frustrated. So I asked myself, what if I just started with the Gospels? And it turns out I kept wanting
