Today, the Bible Study podcast continues the study of the gospel of Luke with Luke 4.

When we left the narrative of Luke,

we left it after Jesus' temptation in the wilderness. And with verse 14 of chapter four, we began

Jesus' public ministry. Jesus returned to Galilee and the power of the spirit, and news about him

spread through the whole countryside. He taught in their synagogues, and everyone praised him.

He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue,

as was his custom, and he stood up to read, the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him,

unrolling it, he found the place where it is written. The spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor. Then he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone

in the synagogue fastened on him, and he began by saying to them, today this scripture is fulfilled

in your hearing. So Jesus goes into the synagogue in his hometown, a place where he has undoubtedly been before,

and he has handed the scroll to read, as would be the custom.

Someone who is well known, who is a teacher, would get the honor of reading it.

If there wasn't somebody well known there, would go to some other member of the synagogue.

And so he chooses to read from the prophet Isaiah a specific passage about the coming of the Messiah.

That's what that section is.

The Spirit of the Lord is on me because he annoited me to preach good news to the poor,

freedom for the prisoners, sight to the blind.

And so the people understand probably that that is a messianic prophecy.

And so far everything is going very normal.
