Summary

We have an exciting episode for you all today! We recently read the book Atomic Habits by James Clear and our minds were blown! This book has been on our radar for some time and what better time to sit down and share our thoughts than at the start of a new year. Starting a New Year will prompt many of us to think about resolutions, but we pushed your thinking with our first episode by having you instead focus on building habits. Since then, we have always understood the importance of building effective habits. So when we learned about James Clear’s book Atomic Habits, we knew this would align directly with what we believe.  In this episode we are going to share things that resonated with us, our biggest takeaways, and how we are planning to implement tips and strategies moving forward. So grab a drink, go for a walk or put your airpods in while cleaning because this is going to be an episode to remember.  In this episode you will: Learn the four laws to building habits: Make it obvious, make it attractive, make it easy, make it satisfying.  Building habits is about identifying the person you want to become.  Improvements are only temporary until they become who you are.  Habit formation is the process by which a behavior becomes progressively more automatic through repetition. The more you repeat the more your brain makes this into a habit.  “Goals are about the results you want to achieve. Systems are about the processes that lead to those results.” SO MUCH MORE! GRAB THE BOOK! Atomic Habits by James Clear  SUBMIT YOUR TIME SUCKING HURDLE! We want to know what is sucking up all of your time either as a teacher or just a person. Well, hello there, top teachers. We are your host, Bridget Spackman and Michelle Emerson,

0:05.1

and we are here to make your life easier by helping you master your time, organization,

0:10.2

and productivity as a teacher. Last week, we shared that we're doing a mini-series this month

0:15.9

all on building habits. We shared in our last episode some habits both professional and personal that

0:21.4

Michelle and I are working to build. And in today's episode, we are sharing some tiny changes

0:26.9

that will give you big results in your habit building journey. But first, we have a tiny interruption.

0:33.1

We're going to share a TSAH from Stacey. So Stacey's time-sucking hurdle is planning and organizing,

0:41.0

oddly enough. When I begin to feel overwhelmed, I can spend hours rewriting a new schedule,

0:46.9

planning a healthier menu, or searching Pinterest for new organizational ideas. In the end,

0:52.7

I often don't end up with a plan that's going to improve my

0:55.6

life much more. I get a sense of security from planning and organizing, so I love doing it.

1:01.2

I'm just not real great on the follow-through slash implementation. Yeah, Stacey, it can be challenging

1:07.4

to look for things online without getting sucked into like what I consider the

1:11.4

black hole of the internet. So here's a thing. You have to have systems and routines in place

1:18.2

to build effective habits. It sounds like you are organized, but the next layer is that you have

1:23.3

to follow through with what you were planning out in the first place versus trying to just recreate

1:28.3

or improve yourself each time. Yeah. So Stacey, this TSAH really resonated with me because I'm the

1:35.2

exact same way. I love planning and organizing, but I sometimes struggle with the implementation

1:41.7

because that's just not as much fun, right?

1:45.1

So a few tips.

1:46.4

First, try to find ways to make the actual implementation more enjoyable.

1:52.2

Here's an example.
