Summary
In this episode, Dr Louise Newson is joined by Professor James Simon as they take a deeper look at our bones and discuss osteoporosis: what happens to your bone strength during the menopause, what are the risk factors for developing osteoporosis and what we can all do to try and prevent it.Â
 Â
Professor Simon's 3 top tips for keeping your bones strong and healthy are:Â
- Have adequate calcium from your diet and if you're lactose intolerant (or vegan) you may need to take calcium supplements spread throughout the day.Â
- Take good care of your skin by using sun block and a hat, but try and get the vitamin D you need through time in the sun and from fortified foods.Â
- Do regular weight-bearing exercise that impacts through your bones as you hold your own body weight during the activity.Â

| 0:57.7 | and work out of the evidence because we've got really good evidence. And so that's what we |
| 1:02.9 | work out of as doctors. But there is lots of good evidence showing how safe HRT is at reducing |
| 1:09.5 | risk of diseases. |
| 1:18.2 | And today I really wanted to focus on bones because osteoporosis is a almost hidden killer, |
| 1:19.1 | really, isn't it? |
| 1:24.3 | And a lot of people don't even know what it is and what the risk factors are and what can be done about it, especially for women. |
| 1:26.1 | So I would just love it if you could |
| 1:29.2 | help over the next half an hour. Let us know. First, the basics, what it is and misfactors and how we can |
| 1:37.1 | manage it. So let's talk very broadly about osteoporosis, recognize that calcium metabolism is one of, if not the most |
| 1:52.7 | important mechanisms in the human body. The amount of calcium in your blood, your mind everybody's, |
| 2:01.8 | is critical. If it's too high, your heart, your mind everybody's, is critical. |
| 2:04.3 | If it's too high, your heart stops. |
| 2:06.2 | If it's too low, your heart stops. |
