But back on Earth, his marriage was falling apart.

He was a stranger to his sons and something desperately needed to change.

So I'll admit, it was a little surreal when I finally stepped into their home in South Carolina and shook their hands one brisk November day.

Charlie is over 90 years old, but still as spry as ever.

He was born in 1935, and today lives just a couple of hours from where he grew up.

Charlie was raised during the Great Depression and then watched his dad ship off to the

Pacific Theater during World War II. Dottie grew up in the neighboring state of Georgia in

Atlanta, and her father served in World War II as well. Most families in the South during that era were religious in some

way, and Dotties and Charlie's families were no exception. After World War II, my dad came back and we

moved to his hometown, and I remember we started going to the First Baptist Church and sometime in the year

following I remember my brother and I walking down the aisle and accepting Jesus as our Lord and
