The government sees the Internet as a place of peril and says it's high time for it to be policed.

The era of social media firms regulating themselves is over.

The UK government has proposed some of the most wide-ranging and draconian measures

for regulating the internet in the free world.

The online harms white paper will establish a regulator that can find websites and tech platforms

if they fail to remove what the government calls harmful content.

It will even have the power to block websites entirely.

Brendan, what are your thoughts on this new development in internet censorship?

I think it's really shocking and really scary and anyone who believes in internet freedom

which spiked Apple absolutely does should be really really concerned about it.

The shocking thing for me this week has been the way

in which ministers have been boasting about their proposed new regime. So they're

not even embarrassed about being pro-sensorship.

So they're going around saying this will be the toughest regime in the world

and this is the end of the era of self-regulation for the internet.
