I'm starting today's story in the year 1911.

At a police station in one of our favourite cities on this podcast, Chicago.

It's Friday morning and inside one of the police cells there is a man in a deep sleep.

This man was found lying unconscious in the street

at about 5am, not far from the city's red light district. This is a fairly common occurrence. Men

often party too hard in this part of town, as you can imagine, and under the influence of liquor,

they find themselves unable to make their way back to the safety of their own beds, and probably

wives, choosing

instead to sleep on the pavement. When the officers found this guy, they knew straight away

that he was from out of town. They picked him up and carried him to the nearest station, locking
