Summary
What happens when you lose your job in your fifties and the job market shuts its doors? For Mike Alte, the answer was resilience, resourcefulness, and a crash course in Amazon selling.
In this episode, Coach Brian Olson sits down with Mike to talk about the emotional rollercoaster of starting over, the turning points in his business journey, and how storefront stalking and Keepa mastery helped him go from frustrated job-seeker to full-time e-commerce entrepreneur. Mike's story is a powerful reminder that it's never too late to reinvent yourself and that sometimes, failure really isn't an option.
Get ready for candid insights, rookie mistakes turned lessons, and practical tips you can use today to move your Amazon business forward.
Special guest at the conclusion of today's show, Jeff Schick of JeffSchick.com discusses why you shouldn't just "acknowledge fault" on Amazon seller violations.

| 0:00.0 | Welcome back to Silent Sales Machine Radio. I am your host, Brian Olson, today, and this is Coach's Corner. |
| 0:08.5 | Today I'm sitting down with someone I've been really looking forward to talking to. This is Mike Altie. |
| 0:13.6 | Mike's an Amazon seller, a coach, and someone who's built a serious amount of momentum here after starting from zero in a very uncomfortable |
| 0:22.5 | spot. He's got a great story and he's not shy about the hard stuff. Setbacks, rebuilding, |
| 0:28.5 | kind of what it takes to stay in the game. Mike, welcome to the show. Thank you. I really have |
| 0:33.8 | been looking forward to having you on the show. We talked about this, I think back at the conference, right? Yeah. Yeah. So, you know, one of the things I really have been looking forward to having you on the show. We talked about this, I think, back at the conference, right? |
| 0:38.1 | Yeah. |
| 0:38.7 | Yeah. |
| 0:39.3 | So, you know, one of the things I really appreciated it, I got a chance to go to your session. I was there for the bulk of it. I kind of missed the beginning and maybe just the tail end. But one of the things I appreciated about the session that you did at this year's Proven Conference is just kind of how open and honest you were |
| 0:54.5 | laying it all out there, the trials, the tribulations, the successes, all of that. I think it makes you |
| 1:00.5 | highly relatable, and that's one of the reasons I'm really really been looking forward to doing |
| 1:04.4 | this interview. Let's get started. Okay, good. That's why that's my line. Let's get into it. |
| 1:27.4 | So I'm just going to jump right into the heart of this, right? Because I can relate so much to this, just in terms of we're about the same age. I think I'm a little bit older than you. But in your 50s, you lost your job. I mean, what is going through your head when you realize that you had to figure something else out? |
| 1:33.4 | It was a lot of frustration, a lot of despair. I never imagined it would be that hard to find another job just from a, you know, sounds prideful or whatever, but the resume didn't look that |
| 1:40.2 | bad that the education looks pretty good, the experience looks pretty good. And I never, |
| 1:44.6 | never dreamed it would be as hard to find another job. And so after applying to job after job after |
| 1:50.5 | job and not even getting an opportunity for a phone interview, it's like, okay, well, what's next? |
| 1:56.7 | And, you know, I considered all sorts of things. Early in my life, I did construction as part of a family. |
| 2:02.1 | I had family that was in construction and considered that, considered this business, looked at it a little bit with a brother-in-law who's in the business and ran into Jim somewhat by happenstance and was talking to him because I knew him from years before and said, yeah, tell me more about this. |
| 2:16.8 | But, you know, I was just at that point of I have to do something to provide for my family. And what, what is that going to be? And, you know, the first few weeks, I wasn't exactly sure, but it's like I've got to make a solid effort. And, you know, per se, nothing in life has ever been easy. You had to work for it. And so let's give it all I have and make the best of it. And, you know, that's what I did. I jumped in with both feet because failure wasn't an option. I love that. I love that saying failure is not an option. I think you have to treat it this way, at least for a certain amount of time, if you're really going to find success here. |
| 2:53.3 | And you remind me a little bit of Grant Douglas's story where he's, I think he's a little younger than us, but he was the same way. |
| 3:01.3 | I'm not sure that he lost a job, but jumping in with both feet, trying to figure out how to make this work, started with a relatively |
