Summary

After Rome’s declaration of war in 171, Perseus desperately attempts to stand his ground. When the “Third Macedonian War” drags on longer than anticipated, the consul Lucius Aemilius Paulus is called in and destroys the royal army at Pydna in 168, leading to the end of the Antigonid dynasty and the Macedonian kingdom. 0:38.1	as the bulk of the Macedonian army and their allies had gathered there, summoned on the orders of King Perseus. Having found the king to be a threat to the peace that they put into
0:43.4	place, the Roman Senate declared war on Perseus, and dispatched their commanders across the Adriatic
0:49.8	with an invasion force in tow. The Antigonid ruler remained defiant and was not going to back down
0:56.3	without a fight. Flanked by his two young sons, Perseus spoke in front of his assembled troops
1:02.2	about the injustices he and his father Philip had suffered at the whims of the Republic,
1:07.7	defending his honor as a proud Macedonian king. The deeds of Alexander and their
1:13.0	ancestors were fresh in mind as he urged them to remain steadfast against their Roman opponents.

1:25.6	of Macedonia itself. The Romans, when they fought against my
1:29.6	father, had flaunted a specious banner about the liberation of Greece. Now they
1:35.2	openly sought to enslave Macedonia so that there would not be a king on the border of
1:40.3	their empire, and no race distinguished in warfare could retain a military arsenal.
1:45.8	For if the Macedonians wished to refrain from war and give in to the Romans' demands,
1:50.6	they would have to hand over to arrogant masters, not just their king and kingdom, but also
1:56.1	their weapons. End quote.
1:59.9	Enthusiastic in their support of their king and their anger against the Romans,
2:04.3	Perseus had at his disposal an army prepared to face the Italian barbarians soon to arrive
