But now, someone or something had succeeded where vengeful brothers and woodland predators had failed.

The Duke was dead, and what's more, murdered.

He was found by a chambermaid in the humid middle hours of a summer's morning.

The stench of rotting meat was overpowering and only grew as the other servants picked through the wreckage.
