Did you ever think of learning as training your brain chemistry?

The goal of skill building in learning is automaticity, fluency, ease of use. It's as valuable to the small child learning to ride a bike, the body and

mind discovering how to balance and not tip over while peddling and breaking, as it is to the tween or teen

learning to think critically, what is that set of questions they can ask themselves that help their minds continue to grow.

Becoming automatic looks like ease or skill or fluency.

For instance, as an experienced driver, you can sing to Taylor Swift's new album

and think about the upcoming election at the same time, all while changing lanes on a highway at 75 miles per hour.

Your brain knows how to drive so well you can hurl yourself into the traffic and stormy weather while changing lanes and speeds without

careful attention.

It wasn't that way when you were 15.

When learning to drive, even the radio felt like a distraction.

You are not yet fluent in monitoring the systems you needed to be a good driver.

In fact, fun fact, or maybe not so fun fact,

I was in five car accidents between the ages of 16 and 20.

It takes some kids direct hits to get the lessons.

How can we facilitate this growth of a mind,

skill, fluency.

How can we train our children's brain chemistry for learning?
