Summary

In this week's Battleground: Ukraine with Patrick Bishop and Roger Moorhouse we look at, the rising casualty figures of the Russians. Both sides guard their casualty figures very closely, of course, but the Ukrainian General Staff has kept a running total of Russian losses, this week, their estimate for Russian losses – dead and injured – topped 300,000.

They also address some listeners questions including ones on Ukraines potential nuclear capability, and as ever questions on pronunciation.

If you have any thoughts or questions on the conflicts in Ukraine or Gaza, you can send them to - battlegroundukraine@gmail.com

Hello and welcome to Battleground Ukraine with me, Patrick Bishop and Roger Morehouse, who's standing in for Saul David, who's still paddling a canoe around the

0:21.9

Scottish coast for charity. Saul, we salute you. Well, the last week has seen a few military

0:28.8

developments of note in Ukraine, but also some interesting and worrying domestic developments in

0:35.6

Russia, that is, if you're Vladimir Putin, we'll take a look at

0:39.4

what significance they might have for the war in Ukraine. The first thing to look at, I think,

0:44.0

is those casualty figures for the Russian side, which have emerged. What can you tell us about

0:50.3

those, Roger? Yes, both sides guard their casualty figures very closely, of course,

0:55.2

but the Ukrainian general staff has kept a running total of Russian losses,

1:00.5

which is updated daily and encompasses aircraft, APCs, and, of course, men.

1:06.5

Now, those of you that are on Twitter might have seen the graphic that they produce

1:09.9

each day showing those figures, but this week, their estimate for Russian losses dead and injured topped 300,000. Now, you might remember just a couple of months ago that the Biden administration gave an estimate of 500,000 dead and wounded for both sides. So it's quite plausible that Russia can have clocked up 300,000 on

1:29.4

its own, given that offensive operations are always more costly in lives than defensive ones.

1:35.2

And Russia certainly doesn't have much of a tradition of seeking to minimize military casualties.

1:40.4

Yeah, that's right, isn't it, Roger? I think one of our listeners sent in something a rather

1:43.8

interesting reference to a Solzhenitsyn novel.

1:47.9

Was that August 1914, was it?

1:50.7

Yeah, August 1914.

1:52.5

And there's a lovely quote from that, which I'll just read out, which talked about the Russians back then in August 1914,

1:59.8

quote, throwing untrained troops direct into action without

2:03.5

a pause for a climatization, thrusting them into the front line wherever there was a breach

2:08.3

without considering whether these attempts were strategically justified. I mean, that could almost

2:13.2

be talking about 2023 in Ukraine. I remember from a few years ago now interviewing a Wehrmacht veteran
