| 0:00.0 | The Bible Study Podcast, episode 102. Today, the Bible Study podcast starts a study of the Gospel of Luke. |
| 0:10.1 | Welcome to the Bible Study podcast. I'm your host, Chris Christensen. As I mentioned last week, |
| 0:18.8 | we're going to delve into one of the Gospels, and in particular, |
| 0:21.2 | probably my favorite gospel, which is the Gospel of Luke. Before we start studying Luke, I want to do a |
| 0:26.6 | couple brief overviews. One is, why are there four Gospels, and two is why Luke and how do we know |
| 0:32.6 | this is by Luke? Why are there four Gospels? All four G gospels are written with a different audience in mind. |
| 0:40.5 | And they are probably written in the order of Mark first, and then Luke and Matthew were written next. |
| 0:47.1 | And then John was definitely written later. And Mark's is a gospel that is really written to the Romans. |
| 0:54.4 | And so Mark is a gospel that is the shortest of all the gospels, and it is very concise and very newspaper-like in its orientation, and talks a lot about Jesus' power. |
| 1:05.7 | It doesn't focus quite as much on what Jesus says as Matthew or Luke would, but it talks about what Jesus did, |
| 1:12.8 | because the Romans would be somebody who would understand power. And so really Mark is trying |
| 1:18.0 | to bring that out as he talks about that to his audience. And Mark was a traveling companion |
| 1:23.8 | of Paul and Barnabas, and then later on we believe of Peter. |
| 1:28.8 | And so Mark is most likely the gospel as related to Mark from Peter, who was there for the whole |
| 1:35.6 | thing. |
| 1:36.6 | And then Matthew is a gospel that is written for the Jews. |
| 1:42.1 | Matthew was a Jew, and he is writing for a Jewish audience, and so in Matthew, |
| 1:46.5 | you'll find many more Old Testament references. This is what Jesus did, and that had been |
| 1:51.3 | prophesied by such and such a prophet. And so if you're looking for how the Gospels tie to |
| 1:57.6 | the Old Testament, Matthew is your book. If you are someone who is Jewish, who is coming to |
| 2:02.4 | know Jesus or interested in knowing more about Jesus, again, Matthew is your book. Luke is written |
| 2:07.7 | for those of us who did not grow up with a Jewish background or did not grow up with the Old |
