There's this pernicious lie in some circles of Christianity that says, Jesus Christ

suffered so that I don't have to suffer.

It's a overstatement of the doctrine of penal substitution.

And I saw this video recently by Jordan Peterson, and I want to share it with you and do

some commentary because Jordan Peterson gets it exactly correct.

Here's what Dr. Peterson says.

Well, you can either lift up across or have one dropped on you, right?

There's no non-cross option in this world.

You all know perfectly well that your idiot immature hedonism is going to vanish in a puff

of smoke at the first sign of trouble.

You know that, and you know that it's thin gruel.

That's why your hedonistic and hopeless at the same time.

You need something beyond that.

Why?

Because life in some ways is unbearable.

And so you need something worth bearing to make it bearable.

And life is very heavy load.

And so that means you have to carry something very heavy to justify it.

There it is.

Now, of course, he's quoting from the New Testament, quoting the words of Christ.

And I want to read that and put it in context.
