The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, nor to worry about the future, but to live the present moment wisely and earnestly.

Summary

In this episode of the Anxiety Coaches Podcast, the host, Gina Ryan, delves into the topic of moving beyond worry and finding happiness in the present moment. She emphasizes the natural tendency to get caught up in future thinking and negative expectations, leading to anxiety and obsessive thoughts about potential dangers. Gina explains how the amygdala plays a role in this process, keeping us in a state of emergency when we should be seeking rest and relaxation in the parasympathetic nervous system.

Gina encourages listeners to shift their focus from planning for an uncertain future to fully experiencing and enjoying the present moment. She highlights the importance of creating lasting memories, replacing worry with contentment, getting to know oneself, reassessing goals and plans, spending quality time with loved ones, and fully immersing oneself in all that life has to offer. By practicing mindfulness and being present in the here and now, individuals can cultivate peace, joy, and a deeper connection to themselves and their surroundings.

Drawing inspiration from Mother Teresa's words to begin each day anew and live fully in the present moment, Gina provides practical tips for grounding oneself, appreciating the beauty of everyday life, and embracing spontaneity. She urges listeners to savor life's moments, overcome negative thinking patterns, and experience the richness and diversity of existence. Gina's message resonates with the wisdom of the Buddha, who advocated for living wisely and earnestly in the present moment to nurture both mental and physical health. Overall, the episode serves as a gentle reminder to prioritize mindfulness, find balance amidst life's uncertainties, and seek happiness in the now.

In today's episode, I wanted to talk a bit about getting beyond our worry.

0:49.0

It's a natural tendency and I know we all do a little bit of it and we just don't want to

0:55.8

spend our entire life in that future thinking in that negative expectation of life. So I was hoping we could talk beyond worry

1:08.8

and more about finding happiness in the present. So it really is easy to get caught up in planning our future.

1:17.8

We're meant to do that. We make goals, we have expectations in life, but again like I just said we don't want to spend

1:26.7

our days in negative expectation. And when we are caught in anxiety, the point there is that we are no longer just planning or even watching out for pitfalls that might happen, we are obsessed with them.

1:45.0

All we can think about is what might happen that is dangerous, that is negative, that is painful, and that is

1:55.0

because we are caught physically and emotionally in this place where our amygdala is seeking to keep us safe because we are sending those

2:08.7

messages that we are somehow in danger.

2:13.0

Everything is working, it's just working on autopilot without going back into the rest and digest parasympathetic side of your nervous system, which is where

2:28.1

you want to live.

2:30.2

So what happens is the amygdala is stuck on emergency. That's it. So we want to pet the lizard,

2:38.2

pet that amygdala lizard and just say, it's okay, I appreciate your help but you can rest now I've got this

2:47.8

and there's a lot of ways we can do that and one of them is to be aware of these

2:52.1

negative expectations that we can find ourselves in.
