A sideshow is a diverting incident or issue that distracts attention from something more important, the real show. In Buddhist practice, we strive to understand the sideshows we are often presenting to ourselves and to the world. What's the real show behind the sideshow?

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Secular Buddhism Podcast.

0:04.8

This is episode number 101. I am your host Noah Rochetta and today I'm talking about

0:11.8

side shows, specifically what is your side show.

0:21.2

As always keep in mind you don't need to use what you learn from Buddhism to be a Buddhist.

0:26.4

Use what you learn to be a better whatever you already are.

0:30.4

Now I've been interested in talking about this topic, this concept of a side show.

0:35.7

It's been on my mind for a few weeks. The definition of a side show is a diverting incident or

0:43.2

1:36.8

thing that often goes unnoticed? You know unnoticed by me or you as the person who's running the

1:45.5

side show, but also to the audience that sees the side show and doesn't see the more important show

1:51.0

taking place behind the curtains. And I like that concept a lot. And there's a quote that I want

1:59.1

to share from Alan Watts where he really alludes to this idea, but he's talking about it in the

2:06.2

context of fear. But I think it's relevant. So I want to share that with you. So the quote goes

2:11.8

open quote, but you must remember that the secrets of all this is not to be afraid of fear.

2:19.2

When you can really allow yourself to be afraid and you don't resist the experience of fear,
