I'm going to start today's story in the year 2000, on a Sunday night in April.

We're in a small city in California called Clovis.

It's late at night, about 11.30pm.

Four McDonald's workers are closing down and locking up the restaurant for the nights after their long shift.

They're scrubbing down the oil from the griddles, mopping up the sticky floors and cleaning out the toilets.

All under the careful eye of the Ronald McDonald figurines dotted around the restaurant.

One of the employees opens the till and begins calculating the day's takings. It looks have been another

steady Sunday, nothing out of the ordinary. But that's all about to change. Because

these four McDonald's employees aren't alone in the restaurant.

It's not just Ronald McDonald who's watching them.

There's someone else as well.

He's dressed head to toe in black and his face is covered with a balaclava.

He's watching the employees from the roof and he's carrying a gun.

But of course, none of the employees know that he's there.

Their minds are on one thing.
