Summary

Iconic KC radio station WHB celebrates 100 years on the air Thursday night at the Midland Theater with on air hosts, callers, athletes, coaches and dignitaries in attendance... it's a big deal.  This legendary station celebrates an incredible history from it's humble beginnings in 1922 to basically inventing the the Top 40 format and then becoming a Sports Radio phenomenon in the early 2000's.  While it's not what it used to be, WHB should be celebrated.  They asked me to do a video interview instead of having us  (Jessica was an original and 23 year employee)  appear in person and I'll play some of the audio for you.     Royals rookies are putting on a show as the team is fun to watch again.  Is it for real or just a flashy burst?    A gay race car driver is competing in the NHRA event in Topeka this week and the media are making him out to be Jackie Robinson.  He most certainly is not.   And the all new Zambezi Zinger returns to Worlds of Fun next year, 50 years after the original was built.

My favorite radio station of all time, to no one's surprise, is WHB, historic radio station in City, celebrating its 100th year as WHB. There will be a massive

0:26.3

event at Midland Theater on Thursday night with all kinds of sports, personalities, former coaches,

0:33.0

players, athletes, broadcasters, callers from the radio station, famous callers from the radio station,

0:41.2

all kinds of people celebrating. There's going to be live music, a big production at the Midland

0:45.0

Theater, a VIP red carpet event, cocktails, all kinds of stuff as they celebrate 100 years

0:50.9

of WHB. Now, it's not been 100 years of Sports Radio 810 as union broadcasting took

0:57.6

over WHB over 20 years ago in 1999. It's when union broadcasting took over WHB and purchased the

1:07.1

property. But there's an amazing history of this radio station being celebrated

1:11.2

on this Thursday night. The first thing to know about WHB is there's very few radio stations that

1:17.1

are three letters that are their call letters. You may notice that through the years,

1:21.8

most stations start with a K. We have so many in Kansas City, KMBZ, KCMO, all kinds of television stations. If you had a W,

1:32.1

you were really different. And even WDAF, which is Channel 4 and at one point was 61 country, WDAF,

1:41.1

AM and FM radio, were quite different just to have a W with your call letters.

1:46.8

There were even fewer that were three-letter W stations. WGN and Chicago comes to mind for a lot of

1:53.8

people as something that really stands out. WHB and Kansas City was it. And that was it.

1:59.9

The call letters, the signal, the station was everything.

2:05.4

The station was founded in 1922 by Samadair and John Schilling, according to the website today

2:11.5

concerning the big event that will be taking place on Thursday night. I've known a lot of the

2:16.6

history of WHB from being a co-founder of union broadcasting, which has owned WHB now for about a quarter of

2:22.9

the time, almost a quarter of the century that WHB has existed. It was the first top 40

2:29.6

radio station in America. Ultimately, it invented the top 40 format. There were some shows that would come on
