Summary

Our approach to dying is a reflection of how we think about so many other different parts of our life, which for many of us is based on fear. Though death is the only thing we are guaranteed in this life, the associated grief, loss, and loneliness are human emotions we often tend to avoid. At times, these thoughts cause us to have a fear of life, we stop living because we're so afraid of dying. In today's episode, Ann Grant shares her thoughts on death, reflecting on how the death of her mother shaped her views on dying and how our thoughts on death have changed.

Now, Anne is unique. At first blush, she'd peg her as an old hippie,

1:14.7

a quasi-nudest northern Californian organic gardener who collects her own poop. All of that is true.

But that's too simple of a read. Anne grew up on a proper ranch, calling roosters, butchering pigs, re-roofing barns, and laying foundations.

And at 76, she still carries that grit with her.

1:39.0

She's a voracious reader, intellectual, but not a feat.

She and her husband, Jack, Skyler's dad, have lived on the

same property for nearly 50 years with no central heating, limited plumbing and electricity,

a rotary phone, and no internet. Now, Anne and I have a quirky and warm relationship, one that belies the stereotypical mother-in-law, son-in-law, rapport.

And today on the show, we discuss something typically taboo, death, or more specifically dying well.

Anne is honest and sanguine about how she wants to die with dignity.

And we talk about that today.
