| 0:00.0 | So we all know that the WWE in 2001 was a pretty good promotion as the Attitude Era |
| 0:04.9 | Rored 2 success, and yes, they made a lot of money. The issue was this was also the 12-month |
| 0:09.8 | period where the WWE bought WCW, when they had all the pieces that just board, |
| 0:15.4 | well, they kind of did whatever the flub they wanted. So let's do something different for today |
| 0:19.3 | and actually focus on the worst WW moments of 2001. And if you've never seen some of these, you can go and check them out |
| 0:26.2 | after the video. I am Simon Miller. Let's go. Number 10, the Duchess of Queensberry |
| 0:31.7 | Rules Match. So at Backlash, 2001, I think everybody in WW sat down and creatively thought to themselves, |
| 0:38.2 | what have we never done before? |
| 0:40.2 | And somebody came up with the Duchess of Queensbury. |
| 0:43.2 | You can see her on your television screen now. |
| 0:45.3 | I have no idea who this was meant to be, |
| 0:47.8 | and can only presume that some WWF staff have got told, |
| 0:51.3 | you need to dress up like whatever this is, and smile a lot and man, really get behind William Regal and Chris Jericho. You now feel like you've done some drugs, I understand. It's also important to point out this was the feud where Chris Jericho peed in William Regal's tea. While that should have been terrible, well, I would implore you to go and watch William sell this today, and it's a great lesson to all you young wrestlers. You can make anything work, you've just got to find the comedy in it. Now, the idea of all of this is that William Regal as the heel was going to keep getting the rules changed. Hence why he wanted a Duchess of Queensberry Rules match to begin with. He was trying to pull a fast one. It also meant that every time it looked like Jericho might win. Nope, you didn't know the laws. Jim Ross wins this one too because halfway through he actually starts questioning whether or not this duchess was qualified for the job. And look, I'll be honest with you, there is some entertainment to this. But given that it was William Regal and Chris Jericho, I think they probably could have just had a normal match. I mean, they were pretty flipping good. Number nine, Albert is the hip-hop hippo. So I always felt sorry for Matt Bloom, who these days heads up the NXT program and sounds like he does a really good job. But I only was he called Prince Albert for a while, and I will get you to Google that one, although not if you're under the age of 16, but soon after this, we turned him into, you've already heard it, the hip-hop hippo. He started teaming with Scotty Too Hotty as well after he'd beat him in November, and the main reason we did this is because everybody hoped that Albert could become the new Rikishi after Rikishi had turned Hill a year or so before this, and we'd totally drop the. There's also something that Vince Raman liked to do, because he did it with Kergan, he did it with Giant Silver, he did it with the Great Carly, he did it with Shanky. If you are of a certain size, he's going to make you dance. Amazingly, too, Albert had actually been the Intercontinental Champion during the summer of 2001. And do you know who he beat for that belt? Kane. That was the 28th of June episode of Smackdown. And then six months later, he was essentially in a comedy group. Listen, nobody loves Goofy Wrestling for Life more than I do. But this just felt like we pushed it into a corner and said, look, you've got to do something, so this will be fine. I'm surprised. It didn't really get over. In case you are writing this down for your trivia books, it was Lance Storm that beat Albert to win that intercontinental championship in July. And then soon after this, Albert went to Japan. He would then come back as Lord Tenzai. He will probably talk about that again soon. Number eight, China squashes the women's |
| 3:08.0 | division. Now there was nothing wrong with this, because as the WWE built her as, she was the |
| 3:12.2 | ninth wonder of the world, and China opened many a door that women and other wrestlers are still |
| 3:16.7 | walking through today. She was one of a kind and a badass. The issue was, is that she saw her |
| 3:21.4 | direction of travel way differently to WWE, so when she sat down with Jim Ross and Vince McMahon to decide what her next creative steps would be, she wanted to stay in the men's division, whereas they wanted her back in the women's division. JR has talked about this a lot on his grilling JR podcast, where he has admitted that the real-life Jolie Lawler did become hard to deal with behind the scenes, but even then you think they could have come to a compromise. As opposed they must have said something because China did go back to the women's division where she just squashed everyone. And I'm sure you've seen WrestleMania 17, where she just walks over ivory, and the whole thing lasts about two minutes. And there's nothing wrong with that if the end story is all of a sudden a bigger person comes in to beat China, but that clearly wasn't the plan. So after a while, we had no more bodies left and believe you me. In 2001, the last thing he wanted to do was leave the women's division in a state of peril. It would be another 10 plus years before WW finally realized, oh yeah, the women can work like men. In men that after Judgment Day, she was gone from the company and she never returned. And that really is a sad moment all around. If anyone deserved a round two, it was China. And very sadly, passed away way too soon in 2016. I really do feel like this happened today. They could have gone the same page. Delaus, it kind of all went bad. Number seven, judging Buff Bagwell on one match. |
| 4:34.9 | So this story has been told to death, and to be honest, I can understand if you do end up on either side. |
| 4:39.8 | But after the WWF had bought WCW, the initial plan was to turn Monday Night Raw into Monday Night Trow. |
| 4:47.1 | Smackdown could then be the |
| 4:48.2 | WWF show and eventually we would get the invasion angle after we had built WCW back up. |
| 4:53.8 | If you weren't watching in February of 2001, I can tell you, World Championship Wrestling was |
... |
