Today is the day the Lord has made, and these are the times the which God has decided and shall live. And look, before you tell me, that's not your problem, let me explain what

these numbers actually means. These mean that 85% of young men sitting in American prison

cells tonight or today came from a fatherless home.

It means that 71 percent of high school dropouts grew up without a dad. It means 60 percent of

youth suicides, children who decided that life was not worth living, came from homes where a father

was absent. Those are your neighbor's

sons. Those are boys who sat in pews with empty seats beside them on Father's Day. And here's

a number that should make every man in this audience go completely still. Because I know you're a

present father or you're trying to be or maybe you want to be.

Sociologist Vern Bankston spent 35 years tracking over 350 families across four generations.

His landmark study, Families and Faith, found that the single greatest predictor of whether a child would carry their faith into adulthoods is what was it Sunday school it's not

youth group and I love youth group it's not family devotionals though those matter as well the number

one factor was the warmth of the father not whether he was theological not whether he memorized

scripture whether the child felt close to him, whether the

father was warm. A cold, distant father who drags the kid to church every week or worse yet

drops him off, drives away, statistically is less likely to pass on the Christian faith than a warm

present father who occasionally misses a Sunday.
