Summary

Some linguists work with multiple languages, while others focus on just one. But for many people, learning a language after early childhood is the thing that first gets them curious about how language works in general and all the things in their native language(s) that they take for granted. In episode 10 of Lingthusiasm, your hosts Gretchen McCulloch and Lauren Gawne talk about how learning languages can feed into linguistics and vice versa. We also explore the power dynamics that affect learning languages, and the importance of learning about the rules of interaction as well as the rules of grammar. This month’s Patreon bonus was about hypercorrection, where you try so hard to follow a linguistic rule that you end up overshooting. You can get access to it and previous bonuses about the doggo meme, swearing, teaching yourself linguistics, and explaining linguistics to employers by supporting Lingthusiasm on Patreon. http://patreon.com/lingthusiasm Gretchen’s new recorder in this episode is thanks to the support of our patrons! but these recorders are kind of linguist

famous for being reliable, solid recorders, especially for doing things like field work.

1:01.7

So I've had one for quite a few years to do my linguistic field work with.

1:05.9

So if you listen to any of my recordings from Yolmo or Shuba or any of those in the archives that I have,

1:13.3

they're made on this very same recorder. And so that's why I've always been able to sound good

1:18.2

without us needing any budget for that. But now we're Twinsies and you have a Zoom H4N as well.

1:24.4

So now I have a matching one. They're friends. Yeah. They haven't met yet, but that's

1:29.8

okay. They're going to meet them in audio heaven so that we will sound the same audio wise,

1:35.9

and so that I can learn how to use it from Lauren. And we're going to sound really good. So that's

1:39.3

exciting. Yeah, and a big thanks to our patrons for that. Yeah, and it is thanks to people on
