Welcome to the Bible Study podcast. I'm your host, Chris Christensen.

Today, the verse that we'll be looking at is the beginning of John, chapter 8, verses 1 through 11.

0:39.7

It begins this way, but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. At dawn, he appeared again in the temple courts where all the people gathered

0:44.0

around him, and he sat down to teach them. The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman

0:49.5

caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the law, Moses commanded us to stone

0:59.4

such women. Now what do you say? They were using this question as a trap in order to have a

1:04.9

basis for accusing him. And the trap is this. If Jesus agrees with the law and calls for this woman to be stoned,

1:15.3

then he's in violation of Roman law because the Romans have reserved for themselves the right of capital punishment,

1:23.0

because they're the ones who are in occupation of Israel at this time or of Judah at this time.

1:28.9

And if he disagrees with the law, then the people may reject him as a prophet,

1:33.6

and he will lose his popularity, and the Pharisees can either ignore him

1:38.5

or they can have him done away with because he won't be protected by the people.

1:43.1

Now, one interesting thing here is, did you notice,

1:45.8

the woman was caught in the very act of adultery? Where's the guy? She was caught in the act of

1:53.6

adultery, means she was with somebody. And indeed, the law of Moses does call for both of them to be

1:59.4

stoned. So clearly this is a setup here because they don't even bring the guy and they say,

2:04.7

what should we do?

2:06.7

And Jesus doesn't do what they expect.

2:11.3

The verse continues this way.
