Earlier that season at Candlestick,

the young 49ers had beaten the Cowboys 45 to 14.

And the Cowboys I was covering thought,

eh, it was just one of those fluky crazy days.

Nope.

That game in October was a coming out party for Joe Montana's 49ers,

a declaration of authenticity for those young 49ers.

I was there at Candlestick for the October game and then for the January championship game

in which Dwight Clark rose up into the fog over a rookie named Everson Walls.

To snare a pass, Joe Montana running for his life had tried to throw away.

That made it 28 to 2749ers.

The press box I sat in literally shook seismically from so many people jumping up and down in the stands.

They were about to beat the dreaded, hated Dallas Cowboys of Thomas Wade Landry.

But 51 seconds remain.
