Expressions with origins you would have never guessed.

Here's one that apparently has multiple meanings.

Rub the wrong way.

It means to bother or annoy someone.

I can see how this would fit. As a budding young man trying to

sew one's oats, it took on a much different meaning for me, and one that usually meant I went home,

frustrated.

Historically, early Americans would ask their servants to rub the floorboards the right way

so as not to leave streaks on the wood.

Heh, wood.
