Hey, bingers, welcome back to binge. Now, I have some exciting news for you. Our biweekly podcast is now a weekly podcast. That's right, you spoke and we listened. Instead of multiple drops every other week, bingeed will now be dropping one episode once a week,

0:41.7

but in keeping with a common theme, which will change every two or three weeks.

0:46.9

So far, we've done series on internet killers, poisoners, solved cases that may actually

0:53.4

still be unsolved, and unidentified serial killers.

0:57.9

We will return to these themes from time to time while always introducing new ones.

1:03.2

But in this week's episode, we turn our attention to bombings and we wind the clock back to October 15th, 1985.

1:15.9

It was a Tuesday morning in downtown Salt Lake City.

1:20.5

Workers were trickling into their offices inside the historic judge building.

1:25.6

Among them was a 31-year-old financial consultant named Steve Christensen,

1:31.8

who rode the elevator as usual up to the sixth floor and walked towards his office with a box

1:37.9

of donuts and a carton of Diet Tab Cola. Outside the door of his suite, Steve observed a brown package on the floor addressed to him.

1:48.0

He picked it up, and as he tilted it onto its side to tuck it under his arm, the package exploded in a violent boom that shook the building.

1:59.0

Shrapnel flew in all directions, and if the blast itself had somewhat

2:03.4

failed to kill him, the arsenal of nails that lined the bomb inside became projectiles that

2:10.0

guaranteed its victim wouldn't survive. As Steve Christensen lay dying with a hole torn into his

2:17.2

chest with donut bits and cans of cola

2:20.0

mixed in with the debris all around him, his security, who was also injured, managed to make

2:26.2

her way to the phone and call for help. Now, a little over an hour later, at a residence in the

2:32.3

suburb of holiday, a woman named Kathy Sheets found a package sitting on a wooden block outside of her garage.

2:40.8

She noticed that the package was addressed to her husband, so she picked it up to take it inside.

2:46.3

And again, as she tucked the package under her arm, it suddenly exploded, sending nails tearing into her body,

2:54.5

disemboweling her and killing her almost instantly.
