Good morning and welcome the kid news. I'm Tori. It's Monday, October 12th, 2020 and we begin

with a holiday that might soon get booted off the calendar altogether. In the United States today is Columbus Day in honor of

Christopher Columbus, the Explorer who mistakenly got credit for discovering America. As it turns

out, most historians give credit to Leaf Erikson, whose

Viking fleet may have beat Columbus to our shores by 500 years. What's more, many of those who

were here before Columbus weren't treated well after his arrival.

And that's why four states and more than a dozen cities have decided to scrap celebrations in his name

and mark indigenous people's day instead.

President Trump is resuming public appearances after his COVID diagnosis.

He's scheduled to be at a campaign event in Florida today, then Iowa and

Pennsylvania later this week. Last night in a phone call the president told

his supporters that he's tested totally negative for the virus.

As of this recording, his personal physician is only said the president's no longer considered contagious.

Meanwhile, the scheduled presidential debate that was supposed to happen on Thursday has been definitively

cancelled.

Instead, former Vice President Joe Biden will take part in a televised town hall meeting in Philadelphia. As for COVID cases around the country,

Johns Hopkins University reports the numbers are going up with nine states

setting a record for new cases last week.
