He confessed to being the 44 killer ordered by a voice speaking for a neighbor's dog. Carry out his bloody outrage. This is just a young pretty woman. I stuck up on him and shot him. Berkowitz planned to use the revolver again and again until he felt police were getting close. I wanted to help people. I wanted to

be for somebody else. David Berkowitz, 24 years old, found himself surrounded by police. Well, he said, you got him. Now the need for a story is not for anybody else from myself. At least say those words ended the biggest manhunt in New York City history. I should spend my whole life here for what I've done. Hello and welcome to killer tape. Killer tape is a biographical podcast on the life and crimes of serial murderer David Berkowitz, also known as the Son of Sam.

Who murdered six and injured ten in New York City between Christmas Eve, 1975, and July 31, 1977. The story told within this podcast is largely told by David himself through an exclusive audio archive recorded in March of 1980 inside Attica Prison where David was being held. There are many accounts of this story and all of them provide a different unique perspective on the overall picture.

At times, we will be including information from each in order to flesh things out as well as to provide context and commentary. But this story at its core is David's.

The 19 hour audio interview around which this podcast is based was conducted by veteran prison reporter Jack Jones after he was contacted by Berkowitz and asked to come to the prison in his capacity as a reporter.

The audio archive represents David's first in-depth interview with the reporter since he was sent to Attica Prison following his arrest on August 10, 1977 for the murders of Don Alloria, Christine Freund, Virginia Voskoreccian, Valentina Suryani, Alexander Esau and Stacey Moskowitz.

As well as the injury of Michelle Foreman, Jody Valenti, Rosemary Keenan, Carl D'Anero, Donna D'Amassi, Joanne Lemino, John Deel, Salvatore Lupo, Judy Pasito and Bobby Villalante.

As the story progresses and we reach a point in the timeline where one of David's vicious attacks occur, we will rewind a bit.

In order to include as much information as we can on the individuals directly targeted by the attacks, as it is our intention to keep the gravity of the lives affected by these horrendous crimes in context throughout the telling.

These portions will be read by our series producer, Alison Baker.

We will also include insights throughout the season from our co-host, veteran prison reporter Jack Jones, who conducted our interview with Berkowitz.

But before we get into it and hear what David has to say, Jack and I are going to provide you with some information on New York City at the time.

David's crimes and how they were reported, as well as a little bit about Jack and just how this whole thing came to be.

As for the moral issues surrounding a story such as this one, it's hard to ignore the fact that we, as a society, stand in the footprint of great violence.

And it is my opinion that only as the careful and unflinching witnesses of stories such as this one, that we will ever have even a fighting chance of learning how we could potentially avoid events like these in the future.

So with all that in mind, I welcome you to what I've come to regard as the dark side of democracy, where even the lowest among us have the right to tell their own story.
