great jazz improviser is like learning a language. Understanding jazz is exactly like learning a language.

You have to understand how musicians communicate with one another. And one great way to start

to understand that language, to start to understand how the great

speakers of the jazz language operated is by learning jazz solos by those who came before us,

those who are excellent jazz musicians.

And I'm not the only one that preaches this.

So you build those oral skills so that you internalize that language so that when you actually
