The Bible Study Podcast, episode 555. Today, the Bible Study podcast continues the study of the

0:06.4

Kings of Israel and Judah with First Kings 13.

0:18.4

Welcome to the Bible Study podcast. I'm your host, Chris Christensen. Something interesting is going to happen here in First Kings 13. There's a change for the rest of First Kings and then on into Second Kings, where the book has been about kings. That's really what it's called, and it will continue to be about kings,

0:38.4

but more so, it will also be about prophets now, because we've got all of Israel, remember that they

0:46.8

have been unfaithful here, starting with Jeroboam, and I've already given you a spoiler,

0:51.4

they're going to continue to be unfaithful for 500 years until they

0:55.0

go away. And Judah's going to go up and down. And so because of their unfaithfulness, God sends

1:03.3

prophets to speak to the people and to tell them to turn around. This is like when you take your airplane and you head it towards the ground and it starts

1:13.6

saying pull up, pull up, pull up.

1:15.8

That's what basically is going on is God is saying you're headed towards disaster, change

1:21.5

direction.

1:22.1

And he's going to be sending profit after profit to do that.

1:25.8

And many of them are going to die.

1:27.6

Many of them are going to give the ultimate sacrifice.

1:30.3

But a lot of the rest of this study will be this tension between the prophets and the kings.

1:38.4

And it starts here in 1st, Kings 13, the man of God from Judah.

1:43.8

By the word of the Lord, a man of God came from Judah to Bethel,

1:48.3

as Jeroboam was standing by the altar to make an offering. By the word of the Lord, he cried out against the

1:54.4

altar, altar, altar. This is what the Lord says. A son named Josiah will be born to the house of David. On you, he will sacrifice

2:04.1

the priests of the high places who make offerings here, and human bones will be burned on you.

2:10.8

That same day the man of God gave a sign. This is the sign the Lord has declared. The altar will be split apart and the ashes on it will be poured out.

2:21.1

When King Jeroboam heard what the man of God cried against the altar at Bethel, he stretched
