0:20.1	It was the future, changing the way we lived life on a day-to-day basis.
0:24.7	In the 21st century's first serial killer was perhaps appropriately also considered
0:30.9	to be the internet's first serial killer.
0:34.1	In many ways, this offender was both an unusual serial killer and yet, at the same time,
0:40.0	the prototypical serial killer, a person who outwardly presented the image of a pillar
0:44.6	of the community.
0:46.1	But who for years had been praying on some of society's more vulnerable people, whose
0:51.2	life circumstances made them prime targets for a predator.
0:54.7	And he used the internet to do this, something that revolutionized our world, had now also
1:00.6	become a tool for the sick and twisted.
1:03.2	And that's what we will be talking about in this week's Binge series.
1:07.2	We begin our story in March of the year 2000, a new century and a new millennium more
1:12.6	beginning, and the big Y2K scare to everyone's relief was totally overblown.
1:18.6	But up in Monroe, Michigan, about 40 miles south of Detroit, a woman named Carolyn Troutton
1:24.1	was dealing with her own very personal fears.
1:27.5	She worried about the well-being of her 27-year-old daughter, Susette.
1:32.6	Only a few weeks earlier, Susette had moved away from her hometown to begin an exciting new
1:37.6	job down near Kansas City.
1:40.5	Before this, up in Michigan, where she'd spent her entire life, 27-year-old Susette had
1:45.4	been working as a nurse, providing end-of-life care for the terminally ill.
1:49.6	And not only did this work barely pay enough for Susette to get ahead financially, but
