Genesis chapter 42

verses 1 and 2

When Jacob learned that there was grain for sale in Egypt, he said to his sons,

Why do you look at one another? And he said, behold, I have heard that there is grain for sale in Egypt

Go down and buy grain for us there that we may live and not die.

Oh, there is so much we could talk about here about how this chapter fits in with so much of what we've seen before now in Genesis.

Things got us said to Abraham and to Isaac.

Things will happen after this, not just in Genesis, but in Exodus.

When it comes to the people of God being slaves in Egypt eventually.

And even how things got to this point with this famine where grain is for sale in Egypt and Joseph, one of Jacob's sons,

unbeknownst to Joseph is actually the one administering that grain so much we could talk about in the way this story is being woven together.

But I guess that's the point I want to make and to lead us to pray according to

there is a story that is being woven here and God is the one who's weaving it.

And there's a mystery to how this works because it's a story that involves sinful people doing sinful things like selling a brother into slavery

and wrongfully throwing someone into prison and so many different things that we could walk through in this story in Genesis

and what is to come in Exodus that involves sin and evil and hurt and pain and suffering, famine here in Genesis 42 verses 1 and 2.

But over it all, get the picture there is a holy, good, righteous, just God who is sovereignly weaving a story for the accomplishment of his purposes.

And his purposes are good for all his people who trust in him.

Let me say that another time and bring this out from just the story of Genesis and Exodus to the story of well not just the world but the story of our lives in this world.

In a sinful, evil, fallen world filled with sinful, evil, fallen people doing all sorts of things, there is a holy, good, just, righteous God who is sovereignly weaving together a story for the accomplishment of his purposes.

And his purposes are good for all of his people who trust in him.
