Hello and welcome to the History of England episode 13, another and last golden age of Anglo-Saxon England.

So last week we left off with the death of Edward, the man who finally put this one England thing to bed.

We've had a procession of rather short-lived, but very successful Anglo-Saxon kings, Alfred, Edward, Atholstan, Edmunds, Edward.

Things don't change immediately, but things are going to get worse. I just thought I'd warn you about that.

Edward was a sick man and he died without any children, so the Witten went back to the sons of King Edmund.

You may remember that Edmunds elder son Edward had been passed over because he was too young.

In 955 he was still young, but at 15 just about possible, so they tend to him.

Edward was to be another short-lived monarch.

Most 15-year-old, a pretty hormone-ridden, and Edward was no exception.

So in the four years he's king, has a good deal of adolescent behaviour.

His super-k is Edward all fair, because of his good looks, which was to lead him into trouble.

And he started off with the bang as it were, at his coronation at Kingston in 955.

We have to be aware, of course, that later chroniclers have quite possibly turned the story into something much more salacious than actually happened,

but we can talk about all that in just a minute.

So the story goes, that everyone, and that is all the thanes and the bishops and things,

are all Edward's coronation feast, along with one of the leading figures of the church, Dunston, then Abbot of Grastonbury.

Suddenly, Dunston realises that Edward has disappeared.

This is a bad thing, because it will be seen as an insult to his lords and his guests.

Dunston hurried through the palace to find him, and eventually he did find him,

but he found him in bed in a threesome, with his future wife and his future mother-in-law.

Edward refused Dunston's call to return to his duty, so nothing daunted, Dunston dragged him out of bed,

and frog marched him back to the hall.
