This is CBSI on the world. I'm John Batchel. It is April, 1975. We're at Turatam,

0:12.2

aka Bikinor, the Russian space program launch site. And we're there with Anatoly Zach,

0:19.0

who keeps the very helpful, extremely romantic Russian space web,

0:24.3

which I recommend highly as a subscription site, because he tells not only current stories of

0:30.3

Rus cosmos and its ambitions and its plans for the Earth, Moon system, and beyond, but also

0:36.4

stories from my youth during the Cold War

0:40.1

when information from the Soviet Union was very rare and usually colored with propaganda

18-stroke 1, that took off April 5th, 1975, Moscow time,

0:58.9

about 2 o'clock in the afternoon. And then, Anatoly, a very good evening to you. The capsule is

1:06.4

filled with Vasily Lazarov, the commander, and Oleg Makarov, the flight engineer.

1:12.2

1:16.3

1:26.1

to the Salute 4 space station.

1:28.3

So at that time, Soviet Union was actively developing space station program,

1:32.9

and they successfully operated Salute 4 during the first expedition.

1:39.2

And just a couple of months later, they sent the second crew.

1:43.5

And that crew was supposed to operate the station again for a month or two.

1:48.7

And of course, that flight, Soyuz 181, ended up in a major, major accident.

1:54.8

Yes.
