Hello, welcome back to Scripture Central. I'm Lynn Hilton Wilson, and I'm thrilled to be talking about the epistles of Peter today.

0:07.0

This is one of my favorite two books in the epistles, and Peter's message is how to become holy.

0:14.0

And it just runs from the beginning to the end. The two books, though, are very different.

0:19.0

We see the first book of Peter, having 12 to 18 Old Testament citations, depending on how you count them, where the second one just has one. But both of the books are written from a prison setting. And it's the last time of Peter's life. And so the second book has a very Old testament, last testament feel. Just to refresh your memory,

0:40.9

if you go back to the book of Acts, these two prison letters come after the end of the book of

0:45.7

Acts. The book of Acts never talks about Peter's imprisonment. You know, we get Paul in prison

0:51.1

under Nero and then it ends. You said, we never hear about Paul's second imprisonment or Peter's imprisonment.

0:57.8

But we assume that it is occurring before AD 68, because that's when Nero is killed.

1:05.1

So we have that time period.

1:07.6

Nero served as an emperor from AD 54 to 68. So we assume that these letters are written during this period. Nero served as an emperor from 80, 54 to 68. So we assume that these letters are written

1:14.1

during this period of time, but certainly before 68, because Nero is the one who kills and imprisons

1:20.4

Peter, and the letters appear to come from that period of time. The first epistle is co-authored by

1:26.0

Silas. Now, we don't learn about his name until chapter 5,

1:28.9

and it's the whole Roman name, Sylvanius, but he is the translator or the transcriber,

1:35.3

or he's taking this fisherman's best language and putting it into polished, beautiful Greek.

1:42.0

Silas has mentioned 34 times in the New Testament. Silas is now a companion

1:47.1

with Peter in prison, in Rome, and he takes this fisherman's Aramaic or whatever language

1:55.4

Peter is communicating in and polishes up and puts it in a beautiful Greek so that the letter can be translated to

2:02.5

the language that the Galatians and the people in Asia Minor are able to understand. And in this

2:09.6

beautiful translation, we're told that he compiles it and he edits this first letter. We're also

2:16.3

told that he is writing to the saints in Pontius,

2:19.7

Galatia, and Asia Minor. So this area of modern day Turkey is all in this beautiful group. Just to
